Dorothy Fadiman , born Dorothy Ostwind (born June 3, 1939 in Pennsylvania ), is an American director and producer of documentaries .
Live and act
Dorothy Fadiman grew up as the youngest child of Moss and Anna Ostwind in the Jewish community of Pittsburgh . She has a sister ten years her senior and a brother eight years her senior. By 1957 she attended Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, later Pennsylvania State University . In 1961 she moved to Menlo Park , California , to study speech therapy at Stanford University . There she met her future husband James Fadiman (* 1939), who was working in Stanford on his master's degree in psychology. They married in Churchill Borough, Pennsylvania in 1965. The marriage resulted in two daughters.
After a spiritual experience during an LSD - Rush Fadiman started the phenomenon Inner Light to explore, which plays a role in some religions. In 1974 she met the producer Michael Wiese, who discovered her through her research. Fadiman planned to write a book, but instead, through Wiese's influence, she made her first documentary, Radiance: The Experience of Light .
Over twenty other films followed, often dealing with human rights and social justice. They reflect Fadiman's personal life experiences. Her award-winning documentary When Abortion Was Illegal: Untold Stories was also made , among other things, because she herself had an illegal abortion as a student in 1963 and was seriously injured in the process. Another impetus for this film were current political developments, which made Roe v. Wade questioned. Fadiman wanted to make the public aware of the consequences of withdrawing the legalization of abortions. In 1993 her film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Documentary Short Film. She also took up the subject again in two other documentaries. In a later series of documentaries, Fadiman addressed the issue of AIDS in Ethiopia .
In 2008 Fadiman's documentary Stealing America: Vote by Vote caused a sensation , in which she shows the technical irregularities in elections in the USA. The trigger for the production of the film were her own observations as an election worker in the 2004 presidential elections in Florida, which were confirmed by her research and interviews with other parties involved.
Fadiman lives in Menlo Park with her husband, author and professor of psychology at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology ( Palo Alto ). She is the owner of the film production company Concentric Media and leads seminars and workshops on the production of documentaries.
