Vulgar ( dt. Vulgar ) is the fourth studio album of the Japanese J-Rock band Dir En Gray . It was released in Japan on September 10, 2003. After the subsequent album Withering to Death. As the band's first album was also released in Europe, Vulgar could also be acquired in Europe from February 21, 2006.

Emergence

After the release of the album Kisou , Dir En Gray performed outside of Japan for the first time and gave concerts in China , Taiwan and South Korea . This was followed by the next promo tour, the Rettou Gekishin Angya Tour. The Extended Play Six Ugly was produced and released on July 31, 2002 together with the single Child Prey . The title song of the single was used as the opening title in the anime series Grappler Baki . The final concert in the Yokohama Arena was released on DVD and VHS under the title Rettou Gekishin Angya Final 2003 5 Ugly Kingdom on May 21, 2003. It was also their first DVD release in 16: 9 and DTS .

On January 22 and April 23, 2003, the singles Drain Away and Kasumi were released. Kasumi is also the last release of Dir en gray in which individual band members are given as composers. From June 30th to July 5th, the band began a five-day gig at Akasaka BLITZ in Tokyo. Each of the concert days (with the exception of the first) was dedicated to an album by the band. The fifth and last day was dedicated to the yet to be released album Vulgar . From March 3, 2004, the Blitz 5 Days DVD set of the gig could only be purchased through the official fan club A Knot .

The album was in Japanese record stores on September 10, 2003. The regular version only comes with the CD, while the limited version still contains the censored version of Obscure's music video . The music video compilation Average Fury , which followed on June 29, 2005 , also contained only censored versions, the uncensored version of the video was only released later, on July 27, 2005, on the Average Psycho DVD, along with the videos by Saku , Kodou and Mazohyst of decadence .

trip

The following concert tour lasted until 2004. After the Over the Vulgar Shudder , the The Code Of Vulgar [ism] tour followed. On November 6th 2004 the live DVD tour 04 The Code of Vulgar [ism] was released. The last two concerts of the tour can be seen on it, both of which took place at Zepp Tokyo.

style

The album represents a kind of break in style: the music had become heavier and contained influences of Nu Metal , which were already indicated in the EP Six Ugly . The hardest songs The IIIrd Empire , Asunaki kōfuku, koenaki asu , Marmalade Chainsaw , Я to the Core , New Age Culture and Obscure are more likely to be assigned to Punk / Hardcore and sometimes very fast ( Я to the Core ) or with psychedelic screams ( Obscure ) “Spiced”, sometimes distortion effects ( Increase Blue ) or guttural vocals are used. The songs RED ... [em] , Kasumi , Drain Away and Fukai are rock songs with melodic arcs and hard guitar riffs . In addition to the somewhat poppy ballad Sajou no uta , three other ballads can be found on the disc: audience Killer Loop , Shokubeni and Amber .

The song Shokubeni , consisting of (shoku, darkening / erode) and (beni, red), contains a play on words. The girl in the song is called Kagome, written with the kanji (kago, cage) and (me, girl). Kagome is also a Japanese children's game . One child is designated as the “ demon ”, who stands in the middle and closes his eyes, while the others, holding hands and singing, dance around the “demon” in a circle. When the song ends, the "demon" must name the child who is behind him. If the name is guessed correctly, they swap places. The descriptive name underlines the role change in the lyrics :

[...] a dreamy girl sells her little body [...] It begins [...] Kagome in the cage, when will she leave the cage? [...] The meandering cruel evil - It is the feast of the demons [...] Who is behind the dreaming girl? [...] Even if they kill the voice, hide in the dark, whose back will it be tonight? Also tomorrow night will come to this prison, watch how the demons hide in gorgeous colors. [...]

The song was re-recorded for the B-side of the single Hageshisa to, kono mune no naka de karamitsuita shakunetsu no yami , the video recordings of it are also the music video . The song was interpreted much more emotionally there, is more bass-heavy and contains deep growls and high screaming.

reception

According to Jame-World , Vulgar is Dir En Gray's heaviest and most western album so far . Despite the Nu-Metal, the five would still be unmistakable. The band had reinvented themselves for the second time and, surprisingly, would deliver the most melodic album in the band's history. The omnipresent hardness usually only serves as a basis. The sound would be pleasantly different from the conventional Nu-Metal guitar storm and would exactly match the zeitgeist. This album is an important guide for the development of Japanese rock music, especially visual kei , and has also become one of the best metal records in recent years.

Nihonreview says the album would scare fans off as it marks the transition from the previous, complex rock songs to a hardcore metal sound . There would be a lot of brutal screams and chants and heavy guitar tones, which is very different from the previous three albums and which some fans of the first three albums might not like. The screaming and loud guitars could not hide the usual complexity of the songs, which shows up in every song. Although there were some weaker songs by experimenting with a new sound, which would make this album below average for you En Gray , Vulgar is a very good hard rock album.
