Evrensel ( Turkish for universal ) is a left-wing Turkish daily newspaper . It was founded in 1995 and is an unofficial organ of the Turkish Workers' Party ( EMEP ). It has been banned several times and its journalists have often been arrested and tortured by state organs. Evrensel is one of the few newspapers in Turkey that is not owned by a large media group.

overview

In order to evade bans, the newspaper renamed itself several times, first in November 1996 in Emek ( Emek - Arbeit ), in 1998 in Yeni Evrensel ( New ), then in 2001 in Günlük Evrensel ( Daily ). For some time she added the addition Günlük in smaller letters in her title header in order to emphasize the continuity.

Her most important columnists are Kamil Tekin Surek (topics economic and social policy), Celal Emiroğlu (labor and trade unions), Serdar Derventli (democracy and human rights) and Ustun Akmen (culture). Ragip Zarakoğlu , who became known for his writings on Turkish taboo subjects , in particular the genocide of the Armenians , is particularly dedicated to balancing the various ethnic groups in Turkey .

By drawing lots, the newspaper was given a place as an observer in the NSU trial , some of which it made available to the Berlin daily newspaper , which had not been given a place.

Case of Metin Göktepe

The case of her reporter Metin Göktepe , who was beaten to death by eleven police officers in a mass arrest on January 8, 1996, attracted international attention . The fact that only five of the accused were convicted of bodily harm resulting in death and the others were acquitted sparked international protests. The five police officers were the first in Turkey to be convicted of killing a journalist. However, after one year and eight months in detention, they were released under an amnesty.

Metin Göktepe Journalism Prize

In order to preserve the memory of the employee who was killed and to honor special services to the freedom of the press, Evrensel has been awarding a prize named after Metin Göktepe since 1998. The award, which is presented in several categories, is one of the most important prizes for critical journalism in Turkey. The journalists who have received awards so far include Nedim Şener (1998), Ahmet Şık (2001, 2001 and 2007) and Can Dündar and Erdem Gül (2015).

Sister media

On December 3, 2007, the television station Hayatın Sesi TV was launched, which was located in the same building as Evrensel and where there were numerous personnel overlaps with the Evrensel newspaper. The monthly culture magazine Evrensel Kültür was published since December 1991 . Both media outlets were shut down by emergency decree following the attempted coup in July 2016 .
