Cumhuriyet trial

Gül and Can Dündar , the editor-in-chief of the Turkish daily Cumhuriyet , published a jointly written report in spring 2015 with photos of alleged arms deliveries by Turkey to extremists in Syria in 2014. Gül and Dündar were arrested in November 2015. They were accused of espionage , divulging state secrets, preparing a coup d'état and aiding and abetting the formation of a terrorist group. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Turkish intelligence service were joint plaintiffs. At the end of February 2016, the Constitutional Court ordered the end of pre-trial detention. In its reasoning, the court stated that the personal freedom and security of journalists and the freedom of the press had been violated.

President Erdoğan responded to the decision of the Turkish Constitutional Court by saying that he would neither recognize nor obey the judgment.

In May 2016, a court found Gül and Dündar guilty of disclosing classified documents, and on May 6, 2016 both were convicted. Gül received five years imprisonment. The verdict is not yet legally binding. On July 16, 2018, Gül was finally acquitted, but Dündar was not.
