Local election in Turkey 2009
The 14th local elections of the Republic of Turkey ( Turkish : 14th Mahallî İdareler Seçimi ) took place on March 29, 2009. The eligible voters elected the members of the 81 provincial parliaments, the 16 major city mayors as well as 957 district mayors and 1974 district mayors.
Voting
Voters who live within the boundaries of a major city have the right to cast five votes:
- City Mayor ( Turkish : büyükşehir belediye başkanı )
- Mayor of the city ( Turkish belediye başkanı )
- City Council ( Turkish belediye meclisi )
- Government Parliament ( Turkish il genel meclisi )
- Muhtar (German village chief )
Voters residing within city limits have the right to cast four votes:
- Mayor of the city
- City council
- Provincial Parliament
- Muhtar
Voters who live within village limits have the right to cast two votes:
- Provincial Parliament
- Muhtar

Mayor of the provincial capitals
Of the 20 participating parties, only seven managed to win one of the 81 provincial capitals. In Şanlıurfa , the former mayor Eşref Ahmet Fakıbaba was the only independent candidate to become mayor. As can also be seen on the map, the CHP is concentrated in the Mediterranean and Aegean region, the DTP in the southeast of the country. In detail, the parties won:

There are 16 major cities in Turkey. In addition to the election of a mayor for the individual districts, a lord mayor or, literally, a city mayor was elected. The results are:

Miscellaneous
- A few days before the election, the chairman of the BBP, Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu, died in a helicopter crash. His death resulted in his party winning the post of Lord Mayor in Sivas.
- A total of 19 people died on election day and the following days. More than 150 people were injured.
- One week before the election, the AKP candidate for the mayor of Manavgat died. Still, he came first in the election. The office was awarded to the second most successful candidate.
- There are only two women among the 81 mayors of the provincial capitals.
- Murat Karayalçın resigned from his party, the social democrat Halk Partisi , to run for the CHP as a candidate for Ankara's mayor's office. Karayalçın had been mayor of Ankara before, but lost that election to Melih Gökçek.
- The CHP politician Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu , known for his actions against embezzlement and corruption , ran for the mayor's office of Istanbul against Kadir Topbaş . The CHP wanted to win the very important cities of Ankara and Istanbul, but failed.
- The independent mayor of Şanlıurfa Eşref Ahmet Fakıbaba later joined the Saadet Partisi .
