Yılmaz Büyükerşen (born November 8, 1937 in Eskişehir ) is a Turkish professor and politician of the Republican People's Party (CHP). He is the incumbent mayor of Eskişehir.

Life

education and profession

Büyükerşen graduated from Eskişehir in 1962 with a degree in economics and trade . During this time he worked as a reporter, columnist, cartoonist and editor in various newspapers. Together with former fellow students and the money from blood donations, he founded a chamber theater and then the city theater.

In 1966 he received his doctorate in economics, in 1968 he became an associate professor and in 1973 he became a full professor. In 1973 he designed a model for a distance university in Turkey. In 1976 he was elected chairman of the Academy for Economics and Commerce.

The President of the Turkish Republic appointed him rector of the Anatolia University in 1982 . After his first term in office, he was reappointed Rector in 1987 by President Turgut Özal . In addition, he was a member of the Supreme Council for Radio and Television (RTÜK).

He founded the first film and television school in Turkey in Eskişehir; while he concentrated on culture and literature. He promoted the establishment of the faculties for literary studies, communication studies, as well as for applied and visual arts and founded the state conservatory in Eskişehir.

He pioneered the establishment of a second university in Eskişehir that enabled distance learning. With 1.4 million enrolled and 2.2 million trained students, the Anatolia University in Eskişehir has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records .

Büyükerşen is also the only professional wax figure sculptor in Turkey. The wax sculpture of the state founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in the Anitkabir Museum was designed and shaped by him. The first wax museum in Turkey was founded on May 19, 2013 and is called "Museum Yılmaz Büyükerşen" after its sponsor.

Political career

In the elections of April 18, 1999 , he was nominated by the Democratic Left Party (DSP) as a candidate for the mayoral office of Eskişehir and elected with 44% of the valid votes. In his first term of office he developed the idea of ​​“urban development projects”, then he started building the tram in Eskişehir.

In the local elections on March 28, 2004 , he was re-elected with 45% of the vote.

In the 2009 elections he received more than 50% of the votes cast and was again confirmed in office. The former chairman of the DSP offered him to take over the chairmanship of the party, which he refused.

In 2011 he moved to the left-wing Republican People's Party (CHP). In the 2014 elections he was re-elected as mayor. In the local elections in 2019, he was re-elected with around 52% of the vote.

He is married and has two children.
