Mehmet Özhaseki (* 1957 in Kayseri ) is a Turkish politician from the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi . Between 1998 and 2015 Özhaseki was mayor of Kayseri.

Life

After graduating from high school in Kayseri, Özhaseki began studying electrical engineering at Hacettepe University in Ankara . After dropping out of his studies, he moved to Istanbul University to study law there. After an internship in the Kayseri justice building, he moved to the head of the family business, which is active in the textile sector, without practicing his profession. He stayed there until 1994.

From 1980 he also worked in the field of charitable foundations, associations and organizations for those in need.

After Özhaseki entered politics in 1994, he was elected mayor of the Melikgazi district of Kayseri in the local elections on March 27, 1994 . On June 23, 1998, he was appointed Lord Mayor of Kayseri by the local council after his predecessor Şükrü Karatepe had to resign. In the 2009 elections , he received 61 percent of the vote. He became the first politician to hold this post in four terms. In February 2015, he resigned from office to run for his home province of Kayseri in the 2015 general election. In the Yıldırım cabinet , he was Minister for Environment and Urban Planning from 2016.

In 2019 he was nominated for the local elections in Turkey as a candidate of the AKP for mayor of Ankara, but was defeated by the opposition man Mansur Yavaş .

He is married and has four kids. He can demonstrate knowledge of foreign languages ​​in English and Arabic. He is also an honorary member of the two football clubs Kayserispor and Erciyesspor .
