Citadel of Kayseri in Melikgazi

Melikgazi is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Kayseri . Since a regional reform in 2014, the municipality ( Belediye ) is congruent with the district (İlçe). All previous villages ( köy ) are now districts ( Mahalle ) of the municipality. The southern part of the provincial capital Kayseri belongs to Melikgazi .

The district is located in the western center of the province. It borders Bünyan to the east, Talas to the southeast, Hacılar to the southwest, İncesu to the west and Kocasinan to the north . The D-300 road runs through the district and runs from Kayseri to Van . In addition, a country road crosses the district from north to south, which connects the provincial capital with Develi via the Erciyes Dağı massif . The extinct volcano, to whose eruptions a large part of the tuff landscape of Cappadocia can be traced back, is also located in the district. Lake Tekir Göleti is located in the southeast and Sarımsaklı Barajı reservoir , in which the Bünyan Çayı is dammed , in the northeast .

Melikgazi, in the urban area of ​​Kayseri, is home to the city's citadel, which was built in Byzantine times and expanded by the Seljuks , the Seljuk Hunat-Hatun complex (Hunat Hatun Külliyesi) from the 13th century with a mosque, medrese and hammam , the clock tower (Saat Kulesi) and the Archaeological Museum. The Erciyes University (Erciyes Üniversitesi) , the largest university in the city, is also located in Melikgazi. The presumed birthplace of the Ottoman architect Sinan , Ağırnas, is located in the northeast of the district, there is also an underground city . The late Hittite rock inscription by Hisarçık from the 8th century BC is located in the south of the district near Hisarçık .
