Özvatan (former name Çukur ) is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Kayseri . Since a regional reform in 2014, the municipality ( Belediye ) is congruent with the district (İlçe). All previous villages ( köy ) are now districts ( Mahalle ) of the municipality. The city is located about 45 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital Kayseri .

The district is in the north of the province. It borders on Sarıoğlan to the east, Bünyan to the south, Kocasinan to the southwest, Felahiye to the west and Yozgat province to the north . The place is connected to Felahiye by a country road in the west. In the north of the district is the 2281 meter high Hamzasultan Tepesi mountain . In the south, the Kızılırmak flows through the district.

At the beginning of the 20th century the place was still populated by Greeks (rum) . In 1905 there were 90 Greek households and the Ayios Nikolaos Church, built in 1840.
