The Di 8 series are diesel-electric locomotives for transporting freight trains on non-electrified routes. Norges Statsbaner (NSB) procured the locomotives for light freight trains and for shunting, but used them mainly on the Nordlandbahn .

history

For the operating concept for regional freight transport developed by NSB in the 1990s, diesel locomotives suitable for the route were required. After a rental phase with several DE 6400 from the Netherlands and T 44 from Sweden , the delivery of 20 locomotives further developed from the DE 6400 and MaK DE 1002 began in 1996 .

The 20 Di 8s were built by Siemens Fahrzeugtechnik in 1996 and 1997 and were assigned the serial numbers 701 to 720 in the Norwegian numbering system. Because they are used for heavy freight trains, the locomotives are very prone to damage. Originally the locomotives had a yellow color scheme with a red driver's cab. The central driver's cab makes the locomotive ideal for shunting work.

CargoNet Tues 8

In 2002, the Norwegian State Railways handed over the entire series to CargoNet , which also uses the locomotives in Sweden. Some of the locomotives have now been given the gray paintwork by CargoNet.

CargoNet was looking for replacements for the locomotives that were undersized and prone to failure for use on the Nordlandbahn. In 2005 they were replaced on the route by six rented CD 66 , which displaced the Di 8 in lighter services.

In 2010, another six Vossloh Euro 4000 locomotives were leased from Beacon Rail Leasing , so that there were surplus Di 8 that were for sale.

On April 4, 2011, a fire broke out at Di 8 711 near Kløfta . The locomotive carried a freight train with aviation fuel to Oslo-Gardermoen Airport in Gardermoen . The fire started in an electrical cabinet after a diesel pump leaked. The damage to the locomotive was so great that it had to be scrapped in 2011.

Until September 2013, the Di 8 705–707, 709, 710, 713 and 715 were available at CN . Between 2013 and 2015 they were given to NSB BBJ. From there they went to Vy BBJ on April 24, 2019.

Sale to England

In October 2011 GB Railfreight was awarded the contract to operate an industrial railway in connection with the purchase and reopening of Teesside Steelworks in Redcar, UK by Sahaviriya Steel Industries . The company was looking for locomotives to move the cars with molten steel internally between the blast furnaces and the continuous casters. Ten Di 8 could be sold. The first five locomotives left Norway on December 12, 2011 and arrived in England on December 20, 2011. The rest reached England in January 2012. Eight of these ten locomotives were put into service, the other two serve as spare parts donors.
