Lütfi Elvan

Lütfi Elvan (born March 12, 1962 in Ermenek ) is a Turkish mining engineer and politician of the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP). He is a member of the Turkish National Assembly and was Minister of Transport, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development.

Life

Lütfi Elvan was born in 1962 to A. Nuri Elvan and his wife Samiye in Ermenek in the Karaman province. He studied mining engineering at İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi and graduated in 1987.

Elvan received a scholarship from the state-owned mining company Etibank and was able to take up postgraduate studies abroad. In 1986 he received a Masters Degree in Mining Engineering and Operations Research from the University of Leeds . In 1995, he completed another master's degree in economics from the University of Delaware .

From 1987 Elvan worked as an engineer in the "Operations Research" department at Etibank. There he was in particular tasked with implementing computer-aided mining methods. In 1989 he moved to the State Planning Office of Turkey. In 1996 he became head of the regional development department. In 2002 he became Deputy State Secretary in the Planning Office. In July 2007 he resigned and became a member of parliament.

Elvan became a member of the AKP and was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly for Karaman in the 2007 general election. He was also appointed one of the chief advisors to the party chairman and elected chairman of the Hungary-Turkey interparliamentary group.

In the 2011 general election , Elvan was re-elected to the National Assembly. He was chairman of the budget committee.

On December 26, 2013 Erdoğan Lütfi appointed Elvan Minister of Transport, Shipping and Communications in the Erdoğan III cabinet . He remained in this position until March 6, 2015. From November 24, 2015 to May 24, 2016, he was Deputy Prime Minister. He was then Minister for Development in the Yıldırım Cabinet from May 24, 2016 to July 9, 2018 .

Elvan is married and has two children.
