Aziz Kocaoğlu

Aziz Kocaoğlu (born September 12, 1948 in Erbaa near Tokat , Turkey ) is a Turkish politician ( CHP ) and was mayor of Izmir , Turkey's third largest city , from 2004 to 2019 .

Life

Kocaoğlu studied economics at the Aegean University in Izmir in 1973 . A year later he attended Istanbul University . Between 1975 and 1978 he worked as an accountant . In 1979 he opened his own shop selling furniture and ceramics. At the same time, he began his political engagement in the context of the CHP youth organization.

In the local elections on March 28, 2004 , he was elected mayor of the Bornova district. After the sudden death of Ahmet Piriştina , the city's mayor, Kocaoğlu became his successor. In the local elections in Turkey in 2009 , he was re-elected mayor. In the 2014 elections he was confirmed in his post.

To the elections in 2019 Kocaoglu did not occur again. Tunç Soyer (also from the CHP) was elected as his successor .
