Ahmet Piristina

Ahmet Piriştina (born April 8, 1952 in Buca ; died June 15, 2004 in Karşıyaka ) was a Turkish politician of Albanian descent. He was Lord Mayor of Izmir from April 19, 1999 until his death on June 15, 2004 , most recently as a member of the Republican People's Party (CHP).

Life

Ahmet Piriştinas parents came after the Second World War from Kosovo into Turkey . Piriştina attended the primary school in Buca , the middle school in the private school Saint-Joseph and the high school in the Ataturk high school as well as in the "Türkay Koleji".

In the parliamentary elections in 1991 Piriştina ran (unsuccessfully) for the Democratic Left Party (DSP). In the Turkish local elections in 1994 he was elected to the city parliament of the city of Izmir, where he was spokesman for his party. Finally, Piriştina became a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the 1995 parliamentary elections . In the local elections in 1999 he was elected Lord Mayor of Izmir. He joined the People's Republican Party and was confirmed in office in the 2004 local elections . As mayor, he implemented several infrastructure and cultural projects, including the Great Canal Project ( Büyük Canal Projesi ). The Izmir Metro was also built under his aegis.

Only shortly after beginning his second term in office, Piriştina died of a heart attack. He was found dead in his home in Karşıyaka . The city archive and museum in Izmir are named after Ahmet Piriştina.

Private

Ahmet Piriştina spoke French as well as Turkish and married Mine Piriştina in 1976. From this marriage his son Levent and his daughter Zeynep were born.
