The DSP was founded November 14, 1985 by Rahşan Ecevit , the wife of the former Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit , whose Republican People's Party (CHP) was banned and who was only able to become chairman of the new party in 1987. Between 1997 and 2002 she was involved in several coalition governments and, from 1999 to 2002, after her best election result, Bülent Ecevit, was Prime Minister. In the period from 2002 to 2007, the DSP was no longer represented in parliament after a catastrophic fall from 22 to 1% of the vote as a result of the poor economic situation. In 2004 Ecevit resigned as chairman for health reasons. He died in 2006. Zeki Sezer was his successor .

After the parliamentary elections in 2007 , the DSP was represented in the Turkish Grand National Assembly by 13 members who were elected on the list of the Republican People's Party (CHP), in favor of which the DSP decided not to participate independently. While Masum Türker became chairman due to poor results in local elections in 2009 , numerous members resigned in the same year, including founder Rahşan Ecevit and Mustafa Sarıgül , mayor of Şişli , and founded the Democratic Left People's Party (Democracy Sol Halk Partisi) chaired by Rahşan Ecevits or the movement for a change in Turkey , which was absorbed into the CHP in 2010. When Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu became the new chairman of the CHP and the right-wing trend of the actually social democratic party stopped, many other members of the DSP switched to the CHP.

In the 2011 parliamentary elections , the DSP received 108,098 votes, only 0.25% of the vote and no longer entered parliament. It was similar in the two elections in 2015, after which Önder Aksakal took over the party chairmanship.
