The election for the 18th Grand National Assembly of Turkey took place on October 29, 1987. The 450 members of the national parliament were elected . It was the second democratic election after the 1980 military coup .

In this election, politicians like Necmettin Erbakan or Bülent Ecevit and Süleyman Demirel , who had been banned from politics by the military in 1980, could run for the first time again. Ecevit stood as chairman of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) and Demirel as chairman of the Right Path Party (DYP) because the former popular parties " Justice Party " and " Republican People's Party " (CHP), of which they were both chairmen, had been banned since 1980 .
