Constitutional referendum in Turkey in 1961
The Turkish constitutional referendum of 1961 was held on July 9, 1961.
After the military coup in 1960 , the Turkish armed forces initiated the drafting of a new constitution to replace the 1924 constitution . The text of this new constitution was then submitted to the people for a vote and, with a turnout of 81.0%, it was approved by 61.7% of the electorate. The 1961 constitution then came into force on July 20, 1961.
