A total of 399 seats

The election for the 17th Grand National Assembly of Turkey took place on November 6, 1983. The 399 members of the national parliament were elected . It was the first democratic election after the 1980 military coup .

The National Security Council banned the previous political parties, which led to the creation of new parties. Turgut Özal's mother country party won this election with 45.14 percent of the vote. The turnout was 76.6 percent.

The Populist Party (also known as the People's Party) was the continuation of the former CHP and was the only left party in the election. The Nationalist Democratic Party was founded by the military, while the Motherland Party is seen as the successor to the former Justice Party (AP).
