Arthur Långfors

Arthur Isak Edvard Långfors (born January 12, 1881 in Rauma , † October 20, 1959 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish Romance studies , university rector and diplomat.

Life and works

Arthur Långfors went to school in Turku and studied in Helsinki with Werner Söderhjelm, in Paris with Gaston Paris , Paul Meyer and Joseph Bédier , and in Florence with Pio Rajna . In 1907 he received his doctorate with the publication of Li Regres Nostre Dame de Huon de Cambrai (Helsinki 1907) and taught at the University of Helsinki from 1908 . A diplomatic career took him from 1918 to Madrid and from 1920 to 1925 to Paris, where he also worked as a philologist with Alfred Jeanroy . From 1925 to 1929 he was Associate Professor of Romance Philology at the University of Helsinki, from 1929 to 1951 full professor (as successor to Axel Wallensköld ), next to that dean from 1932 to 1935, prorector from 1943 to 1945 and rector from 1945 to 1950.

Långfors was a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences (1920), the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris (1947) and (as successor to Emanuel Walberg ) the Académie royale de langue et de littérature françaises de Belgique (1952), as well as the Accademia di Udine and the Mediaeval Academy of America. Since 1954 he was a corresponding member of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans . He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Paris, Oslo and Glasgow.
