Joseph Bédier

Charles Marie Joseph Bédier (born January 28, 1864 in Paris , † August 29, 1938 in Le Grand-Serre ) was a French Romanist .

Bédier taught medieval French literature at various universities (1889–1891 University of Friborg (Switzerland) , around 1903 Collège de France in Paris). In his best-known work Les légendes épiques he explains the origins of the heroic epics with the locations of the pilgrimage routes (»pilgrimage route theory«).

From 1920 he was a member of the Académie française . In 1929 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1937 he was accepted into the American Philosophical Society .
