Senate of the Republic (Turkey)

The Senate of the Republic (Turkish Cumhuriyet Senatosu ) was the smaller chamber of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey with its seat in Ankara . It was created in 1961 and dissolved in 1981 with the transition to the unicameral system . To become a senator, you had to be over 40 and have at least graduated from university .

Structure of the Senators

According to the Turkish constitution of 1961 , there were three types of senators:

  1. 150 senators who are elected by the people.
  2. 15 senators, who are appointed by the president (Turkish: kontenjan senatörleri ).
  3. Senators for life (the chairman and 22 members of the National Unity Committee and former presidents)

The term of office of senators in the first and second categories was six years according to the constitution . In the first category, 50 new senators were elected every two years. The third category included senators with a life term.
