The Halkçı Parti ( HP , German: Populist Party ) was a political party in Turkey . It was founded on May 20, 1983 by Necdet Calp. The HP was one of the three newly founded parties that were approved by the military in 1983 for the first parliamentary election after the 1980 coup , as a result of which all previous political parties had been banned. It stood most closely in the tradition of the Kemalist wing of the CHP .

In the 1983 parliamentary election , the HP achieved 30.46 percent of the vote, making it the second largest party after the ANAP (45.14%) and ahead of the Milliyetçi Demokrasi Partisi (Party of Nationalist Democracy; 23.27%) , which was mainly supported by the military .

After she got just under 9 percent in the local elections in 1984 , she united in November 1985 with Erdal İnönü's likewise Kemalist Sosyal Demokrasi Partisi (Party of Social Democracy) to form Sosyal Democrat Halkçı Parti (Social Democratic Populist Party).
