Erdal İnönü

Erdal İnönü (born June 6, 1926 in Ankara , † October 31, 2007 in Houston , Texas ) was a Turkish physicist and politician. From March to October 1995 he was Foreign Minister of Turkey.

Life

Erdal İnönü was the son of İsmet İnönü (* 1884; † 1973) and Mevhibe İnönü (* 1897; † 1992). In addition to Erdal, the couple had another son and daughter.

İnönü graduated from elementary, middle and secondary schools in Ankara, studied at Ankara University and received his doctorate in 1951 from the California Institute of Technology . His best-known contribution to theoretical physics is the method of İnönü-Wigner contractions (group contractions) from 1953 together with Eugene Wigner , who set up relationships between Lie algebras . From 1964 to 1974 he was a physics professor at the METU in Ankara. Later he was dean and member of the rectorate of the university. From 1974 to 1983 he was professor of physics at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul . İnönü also held offices at NATO and UNESCO .

From 1983 İnönü was active in Turkish politics and was a co-founder of the Sosyal Demokrasi Partisi . SODEP merged with the Halkçı Parti to form the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP). On May 30, 1986 he succeeded Aydın Güven Gürkan as chairman of the SHP, which he led until September 11, 1993. His successor was Murat Karayalçın .

In 1986 by-elections , İnönü became a member of the İzmir constituency . In 1987 the mandate was confirmed in the regular election. In 1991 the SHP formed a coalition government with the DYP , in which İnönü was Vice Prime Minister and Minister of State. In 1993 the SHP merged with the CHP this time . In 1995 İnönü was appointed Foreign Minister and held this office from March to October 1995.

İnönü died on October 31, 2007 in Houston .
