Safa Giray

İsmail Safa Giray (born March 5, 1931 in Izmir , † June 20, 2011 in Ankara ) was a Turkish politician of the Anavatan Partisi (ANAP). He was a member of the Grand National Assembly , Minister of Public Works and Settlements, Minister of Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs of his country.

Life

Safa Giray was born in 1931 as a descendant of the Giray noble family who founded the Crimean Khanate . In 1954 he finished his civil engineering studies at the İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi . He then worked as a civil engineer for energy, mechanical engineering and mining companies.

Giray came into politics in 1983 through Turgut Özal , when the ANAP was founded after the military coup in 1980 and moved to the Turkish National Assembly as a member of the Turkish National Assembly for the province of Balıkesir . From December 13, 1983 to March 30, 1989, he was Minister for Public Works and Settlements in two Özal cabinets and Minister of Defense from March 30, 1989 to October 19, 1990 in the cabinet of Özal and Yıldırım Akbulut . Due to internal party conflicts, which also had an impact on cabinet work, he resigned. Giray was Foreign Minister under Prime Minister Yılmaz from June 23, 1991 to November 21, 1991 . In 1999 he retired from politics after 16 years.

In 1993, Safa Giray was charged with abuse of office. He was charged in connection with the award of contracts for the construction of the motorway before the State Court . On April 12, 1995, he was acquitted.

Safa Giray died on June 20, 2011 in Ankara and was buried with a state funeral in the Gölbaşı cemetery in Ankara.

Honors

In Balıkesir is the İ. Sefa Giray Bozören Ortaokulu named after Giray.
