Mehmet Fuat Köprülü until 1934 Köprülüzade Mehmed Fuad (* 1888 in Istanbul ; † June 28, 1966 there ) was a Turkish historian and politician.

He came from the prominent Köprülü family and was therefore also called Köprülüzade . He was known for his contributions to the history of the Ottoman Empire , the history of Anatolia , Turkish folklore, literature and language.

biography

Mehmet Fuat was born in Istanbul and was a descendant of the sister of the well-known Ottoman Grand Vizier Köprülü Mehmed Pascha . Mehmet Fuat attended the Mercan University in Istanbul. Then he switched to the “School of Law” ( Mekteb-i Hukuk ), which he left in 1909. In 1912 he was among the founders of the Türk Ocağı (German "Turkish Homeland Association"). After teaching at several schools, he was appointed professor of Turkish literature at Darülfünun (from 1933 Istanbul University ) with the support of Ziya Gökalp . He stayed here until 1939. In 1924 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Education for several months. In the same year he founded the Chair of Turkic Studies at Darülfünun . After 1939 he moved to Ankara, where he taught at the university in the faculties of political science and the arts.

In January 1946 he founded the Democrat Parti with Refik Koraltan , Celâl Bayar and Adnan Menderes and then became Foreign Minister after the parliamentary elections in 1950 and Minister of State from 1955. He is considered to be the leading figure in the participation of the Turkish armed forces in NATO . With the military coup on May 27, 1960, he was arrested like many other members of the Demokrat Parti on the island of Yassıada. He was acquitted after the Yassıada trials . In 1961 he founded a short-lived party called Yeni Demokrat Parti (New Democratic Party). Shortly afterwards he retired from politics. Mehmet Fuat died on June 28, 1966 from the long-term effects of a car accident in Ankara. He is lying next to his father in a family grave in Çemberlitaş cemetery.
