Ömer Faruk Akün

Ömer Faruk Akün (born April 5, 1926 in Istanbul ; † May 2, 2016 there ) was a Turkish literary scholar and literary historian who mainly dealt with Ottoman literature .

academic career

After attending the boys' high school in Istanbul's Kabataş district, Akün studied at the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at the University of Istanbul , where he graduated in 1947 with a thesis on the stories of Dede Korkut and in 1951, after his military service, was also employed as a lecturer received. At that time the department was headed by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar . With a thesis about nature in the Turkish folk poetry he became in 1953 a doctorate ; 1954–56 he researched and studied in Paris at the French National Library and the Sorbonne . In 1959 he was awarded with a thesis on the seal Abdülhak Hamid Tarhan the Turkish education system settled between doctor and professor title of docent , and in 1971 finally professor with a thesis on the letter correspondence Namık Kemal . In 1984 he became head of the Department of Modern Turkish Literature and in 1990 Director of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Istanbul University. Since 1993 he was emeritus , but continued to work for various Turkish educational institutions.

In 2005 he was awarded by the Foundation for Services to Turkish Culture ( Türk Kültürüne Hizmet Vakfı ). After a long illness, he died on May 2, 2016 in Istanbul, where he was buried in the Karacaahmet cemetery in the Üsküdar district .
