İslâm Ansiklopedisi

The İslâm Ansiklopedisi ( İA ) is a reference work for Islamic studies in Turkish , which was written in the years 1940–1987 at the University of Istanbul .

History of origin

The İA was initially intended as a translation of the first five-volume Encyclopaedia of Islam (EI1, 1913–1938) into Turkish, as the EI1 was only published in English , French and German . However, in the course of the creation of the İA, the EI1 articles were revised, supplemented or corrected in detail, so that the İslâm Ansiklopedisi became a 15-volume work. Some articles from the İA were themselves in the Encyclopaedia of Islam. New Edition (EI2, 1960–2007) and many İA articles are referenced in the EI2 article bibliographies. Between 1988 and 2013 a new İslâm Ansiklopedisi was published, the 44 volumes Türkiye Diyanet Vakfı İslâm Ansiklopedisi (TDVİA or DİA), which is a completely original work.

De facto standard for Turkish transliterations

The transliteration of the İslâm Ansiklopedisi has established itself in oriental studies as the de facto standard for the transliteration of Ottoman-Turkish texts. The New Redhouse , Karl Steuerwald and Ferit Devellioğlu are the standard for transcription (pronunciation-based transcription) . Another transliteration for Turkish texts is that of the German Oriental Society (DMG) from 1935. The İA transliteration differs from it in only a few points.
