Karl Steuerwald

Karl Steuerwald (born July 2, 1905 in Strasbourg , † November 1, 1989 in Neu-Ulm ) was a German linguist.

Between 1924 and 1928 he studied German, English and Latin in Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich. He completed his thesis on the London dialect in 1929. In 1930 he went to Turkey and became a teacher at the German School in Istanbul . He then moved to the Gazi Educational Institute in Ankara and was finally professor at Ankara University from 1934 to 1944 . He then returned to Germany for a short time, from 1953 to 1956 he was director of the German School in Istanbul. Then he started working on his dictionary.

The dictionary known under the name Der Große Steuerwald is widely regarded as the best Turkish dictionary in the German language.
