geography
Sebewaing is 60 kilometers north of Saginaw and is on the east bank of Saginaw Bay , part of Lake Huron .
history
The missionary J.JF Auch , who wanted to convert the indigenous population to Christianity , is considered to be the founder of the city, which was initially named "Auchville" in 1845 and "Sebewaing" in 1857. This name goes back to the Algonquian language of the Chippewa Indians and means "little crooked river" ( Little Crooked River ). German settlers came to the area at the end of the 19th century. In 1880 a brewery was put into operation that had been producing various types of beer for over a hundred years. John C. Liken , originally from Lower Saxony , founded other businesses and retail stores in the region, including sawmills . Some of the staves produced for barrels were also shipped to Germany. In addition, grain and sugar beet were grown. Because of the abundance of fish in the bay, fishing was also an important industry.
The city has recently been increasing its sugar beet cultivation and is therefore sometimes referred to as the Sugar Beet Capital in Michigan . Sebewaing hosts a festival known as the Michigan Sugar Festival each year in June .
