As staves is defined as the longitudinal woods in the manufacture of wooden barrels , vats , vats , buckets or stave-shells . Staves are from stave Hauer prepared and then from Cooper (also known as Böttcher , Cooper , Kubler , Fassler or Schafflerwirt hereinafter) composed.

For staves, fine-pored, firm and densely grown oak wood is typically used , occasionally other types of wood. Staves are not sawn, but split along the natural fibers of the wood. Then they have to dry for a long time. During barrel production, they are bent into a curved shape using the steam bending process and held together with tires , which today are mostly made of steel .

Barrel stave towers

In the - dry - south-east Styria, until the 1980s, Fassbinder piled the staves outdoors to dry in the form of up to 12-15 m high, 6- to 12-cornered conical towers, also called stave or devil boxes. At the bottom, a segment was left open as an access hatch, inside each floor a cross made of two boards was inserted in order to climb higher inside with a short ladder. The 2–4 cm thick boards took about 2–3 years to dry. Today staves are mostly dried in air-conditioned chambers.

Barrel stave race

In the past, staves from disused barrels were probably also used as simple skis . Barrel stave races in various places in the Alpine countries are an entertaining link to this tradition. With sturdy mountain boots, you slip into screwed-on loops made of textile belt, leather or rubber on the staves rounded at the front. You drive with one or two simple wooden sticks, often in historical or carnival clothing . In Bad Wildbad, district of Calw, Baden-Württemberg, the barrel stave race takes place every year at the end of January, depending on the snow conditions, an extraordinary attraction that attracts many spectators. Anyone can take part, especially schoolchildren. The barrel staves can be borrowed from the Wildbad Ski Guild if required. The participants have to do a cross-country skiing, a descent and jumps over small snow jumps.

A variant of the barrel stave race takes place every year on the 3rd Sunday in July in the Rhine-Hessian wine village of Horrweiler . In a direct duel, two runners each cover a specified distance on a barrel stave. The runners stand with their legs apart on a stave and pull themselves forward by tilting the stave back and forth in combination with a rotating hip movement.
