In wine production , the vat is used for fermentation and storage of the wine , as well as for beer brewing . In the past, only wooden vessels were used for this, which, like the bulbous, closed barrels, were composed of staves and usually provided with iron hoops. The Böttcher took over the production (see Küfer ). The name tub has been retained and continues to refer to fermentation vessels, which today are mainly made of stainless steel , copper , ceramic or other easy-to-clean materials for hygienic reasons .

The term can also be found in tanneries and in saunas . In the case of the latter, it usually refers to containers for cool immersion baths similar to bathtubs .
