The German School Istanbul ( Turkish Özel Alman Lisesi , DSI for short ), also called Istanbul Alman Lisesi or Alman Lisesi for short , is a private school in Turkey , more precisely in Istanbul in the Beyoğlu district. The school is subordinate to both the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Education of the Turkish Republic .

It was founded in 1868 under the principle of equality under the name of German and Swiss Citizens' Schools and was intended to serve the German-speaking population at that time. In 1871 , a building was erected near the Galata Tower for the exclusive use of the school. This building was damaged in the earthquake in 1894, so the school moved into the current building in 1897. In the following time not only German-speaking but also Turkish students were accepted into the school. In 1918, with the end of the First World War, the school closed and the building was used by the occupiers as an army barracks. After the proclamation of the Republic in 1924, the school was reopened and in 1925 the school moved back into its actual school building. In 1945 the school was closed again and the building then served as the Beyoğlu girls' grammar school . In 1953 the building was reassigned to the German School and has been in use since then.

The graduates of this school take a school leaving examination at the end of their school years; the successful students receive their Abitur certificate and can use it to study at universities in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . Together with İstanbul Lisesi , the German School Istanbul is one of two schools in Turkey where the Abitur can be taken.

history

The school, which was founded in 1950 to serve the German-speaking population in Istanbul , continued its existence despite the failed attempt in 1863 to merge the school with the German Evangelical Community School and received its status in 1867–1868. On May 1, 1868, the German school with the then name Paritätische Deutsche und Schweizer Bürgererschule (Paritätische Deutsche und Schweizer Bürgererschule) was opened in the Kumdibistraße as part of the principle of equal opportunities by the German School Initiative, serving the German-speaking population in the Pera ( Beyoğlu ) district Recorded May of the same year. In the year it was founded, the school had two teachers and 24 students, and lessons were held in rented premises. The school had also incorporated a business school, called the Citizens' School, where economics was taught. The first director of the school, which had internalized a religiously independent, free education and the principle of equality , was Adolf Engelkind. After the Swiss entered the school in the following years, the school building that was owned by the school was built in 1871 in the Beyoğlu district, near the Galata Tower . On August 28, 1872, the school moved into its own building. After the Protestant citizens entered the school on December 1, 1872, the German Protestant Community School was closed. On May 31, 1882, the kindergarten was opened in the same building. The building was badly damaged in the earthquake on July 10, 1894, for which reason the school had to move to new premises. While initially only German-speaking students were accepted, the director Felix Theodor Mühlmann opened preparatory courses in 1879 so that non-German-speaking students could also be prepared for lessons at this school. The construction of the first building of the school, which is currently still in use, began in June 1896 with the support of the high architect Kapp von giltstein and the then head of the Ottomanische Bank Wülfing, after the first building was completed on September 14th 1897, move into the building with 15 classrooms and a conference hall. During the visit of the German Emperor Wilhelm II in 1898, he authorized the school to issue the high school diploma, making the school the first school outside of Germany to issue this diploma. In the early days of the school, German-speaking students were in the majority, but in 1899 the number of Turkish students was already 30% and in 1914 63.5%. In 1903 the second building of the school, a five-story building, was built. In 1911 the school program was expanded and put on an equal footing with the Ottoman schools and with the license that was issued to it on December 27, 1911, the school was allowed to issue the graduates of the last grade with a diploma that was also recognized in the Ottoman Empire. Between the years 1893–1903 the number of students was only 600, in 1916 there were already 1,000. After the end of the First World War in 1918, the school was closed and the school building was used as accommodation for the occupying forces of the French army. During this time the entire inventory of the school was destroyed.

After the proclamation of the republic, the occupying powers withdrew. The German School was reopened in November 1924 in Polonya Straße (today's name Nuruziya Straße) in a rented building. A kindergarten was also opened in the new building, but it was closed again on November 30, 1924. On January 1, 1925, the kindergarten was reopened under the condition that only German children were accepted. On September 1, 1925, the main building of the school was returned. While the building was returned to the German School on July 1, 1953, classes only started on September 1. In addition to the renovation work in 1959, the sports hall and music class were also built.

While a sports hall was built in 1974 for the exclusive use of female students, the next year the sports hall was renovated and expanded for male students. In 1976 the school leaving examination was introduced for Turkish students and graduates. The students who successfully passed this test received an Abitur diploma, with which they could apply to universities in German-speaking countries to study. In 1979, the school's folk dance groups went on a school trip to Germany for the first time, and next year the school's Turkish students were able to take part in the school trip to Germany for the first time. The student exchange program between the two countries began in the 1985–1986 school year. In the 1989–1990 school year, an IT laboratory was opened for students.

After complaints against the previous headmasters and some former employees of the school, the new school management, who joined the school in 2015, filed a complaint against a total of 20 people with the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office for embezzlement and fraud in 2013, after which the proceedings were opened. The acts came to light through the resignation of the former and accused board members from their posts and the commitment of the new school management. According to the declaration by the Federal Foreign Ministry, the amount involved was embezzlement in the range between € 1,922,047 and € 2,155,246.

The school is affiliated to both the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the National Ministry of Education of the Turkish Republic . The German School Istanbul is run by an association board and the school principals work in connection with this board.

The students complete a preparatory year and thus a five-year school education. While German , English and Turkish are taught at the school , French is also an option.

All graduates of the school receive the German language diploma in addition to the upper level diploma . If the graduates also take the university entrance exam and pass it successfully, they also receive the Abitur diploma and the German School Istanbul, together with the Istanbul Lisesi , is one of two schools in Turkey that offer this diploma. At least one student who successfully passes the Abitur examination receives a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service to study in Germany. In addition, the board of directors has also been awarding high school graduates a university scholarship since 2001.

In the 2016–2017 school year there are 640 students, 51 German and 36 Turkish teachers, making a total of 87 teachers at the school.
