The Belgrade Forest ( Turkish Belgrade Ormanı ) is a local recreation area north of Istanbul with an area of 5442 hectares .

It is named after the thousands of Serbs whom Suleyman the Magnificent had deported here after the siege of Belgrade (1521) .

The area was the main source of drinking water for Istanbul during the Byzantine and Ottoman times. The city was largely supplied with water from the Belgrade Forest via the Valens Aqueduct . Under Sultan Suleyman I , the addition of the water supply system for the rapidly growing capital was commissioned. For this purpose, the architect Sinan built the Mağlova Aqueduct between 1554 and 1562 and 1563 .
