Faruk Şen
Faruk Şen (born April 21, 1948 in Ankara / Turkey ) is a Turkish-German university professor and was head of the Center for Turkish Studies from 1985 to 2008 .
Life
Şen studied business administration at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1971 . After completing his doctorate, in 1981 he became head of the "Measures for vocational preparation and social integration of young foreigners (MBSE)" at the adult education center in Duisburg and from 1983 managing director of the pilot project "Teacher training in the transition from school to work". In 1985 the " Center for Turkish Studies " (ZfT) was founded, and he became its director. In 1990 he was appointed professor at what was then the University of Essen . On July 3, 2008, Şen was suspended as director of the Center for Turkish Studies (ZfT). After criticizing himself after comparing the situation of Turkish migrants in Germany with the persecution of Jews during the Nazi era, Şen officially gave up his position at the end of 2008 by mutual agreement with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Şen is married to the psychiatrist Inci Şen and was a member of the SPD .
Controversy over Armenian genocide
On March 9, 2006, in a radio interview a few days before a demonstration by Turkish nationalists against the Armenian resolution of the German Bundestag , Şen expressed the opinion that the genocide of the Armenians in 1915 was not genocide. Şen literally: “That means the term we use for Germany is incorrect for the Ottoman Empire. That is why I would say that genocide according to this definition is not correct. "Thereupon he was sharply criticized by the domestic political spokeswoman for the Greens in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament, Monika Düker and the historians Wolfgang Benz and Medardus Brehl, after which Şen's categorical rejection of the term " Genocide ” in relation to the Armenian genocide in no way reproduces the current debate (culvert) that Şen's statement is unscientific and mere agitation and propaganda (Benz) and the Armenian genocide, in contrast to Şen's presentation, historically as also have legal evidence (Brehl). Şen did not publicly comment on the criticism.
