Foundation for Turkish Studies and Integration Research

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Foundation Center for Turkish Studies and Integration Research is a state foundation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia based in Essen .

organization

The institute was founded in 1985 as a model project. In 1991 it became the Verein Zentrum für Türkeistudien e. V. and since 2001 it has been a state foundation ( Foundation Center for Turkish Studies ). Since 1999 the institute has had a branch in Berlin and since 2001 it has had advisory status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) .

From the establishment of the foundation in 1985 until its contract termination in 2008, it was headed by Faruk Şen . Şen was criticized by the foundation's board of directors and the then chairman of the board of trustees and former state minister Armin Laschet for comparing the situation of Turks living in Europe in an article in the Turkish daily Referans, which belongs to Doğan Yayın Holding , with the persecution of Jews during the Nazi era. As a result, the board of directors decided to dismiss Sen in June 2008. Şen resigned from the position at the end of 2008 by mutual agreement with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The chairman of the board of trustees is the Minister for Labor, Integration and Social Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia, Guntram Schneider .

In March 2010, Hacı-Halil Uslucan was appointed head of the foundation. It was decided to rename the institute the Foundation for Turkish Studies and Integration Research. Due to the contractual connection of the institute to the University of Duisburg-Essen , where Uslucan holds a professorship for Modern Turkish Studies in the Faculty of Humanities, a content-related and organizational realignment should take place.

In 2016, the Foundation for Turkish Studies and Integration Research hit the headlines again when its managing director was released from work. He had introduced a "Dr." to his name, although he was not entitled to use that title.
