Pinetop Perkins (* 7. July 1913 in Belzoni , Mississippi ; † 21st March 2011 in Austin , Texas ; actually Joe Willie Perkins) was an American Blues - musician .

Life

Perkins began his musical career as a guitarist. After a dancer knifed the tendons of his left arm in a fight in Helena , Arkansas , he switched to piano. Initially working with Robert Nighthawk , he is now playing with Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller) .

In the 1950s, Perkins went on tour. He performed with Earl Hooker and recorded Pinetop's Boogie Woogie (written by Pinetop Smith ) in Memphis, Tennessee . His stage name comes from this time.

Perkins stayed in Illinois and withdrew from the music business. It wasn't until 1968 that Hooker was able to persuade him to start recording again. Perkins replaced Otis Spann when he left Muddy Waters' band . In the late 1970s, Perkins and others formed the Legendary Blues Band , which stayed until the 1990s.

As the best pianist, he received the Living Blues Award in 1994 and 1996 . In 2003 Pinetop Perkins was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame . In 2005 he received a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement and in 2008 a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album . This makes him the oldest artist to date to have ever received a Grammy Award. At over 90 he was still on stage.

Pinetop Perkins died on March 21, 2011 in Austin , Texas .
