Fatin Rüştü Zorlu (* 1912 in Istanbul ; † September 16, 1961 on the island of İmralı ) was a Turkish diplomat , politician and foreign minister of Turkey from 1957 to 1960 .

Life

Fatin was born in Istanbul. His family originally came from Zor , a village in the Artvin province . After graduating from Galatasaray High School , Zorlu studied Political Science at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris in France and at the University of Geneva in Switzerland .

Back in Turkey, Zorlu began his career as a diplomat in 1932. From 1938 on he served in various posts in the embassies and consulates in Bern , Paris , Moscow and Beirut . After Turkey joined NATO (1952), he was appointed Turkish ambassador to NATO .

In 1954 Zorlu was elected to parliament as a member of Çanakkale, the Democrat Parti . He served as deputy prime minister from 1954 to 1955 and as foreign minister from 1957 to 1960 until the Turkish Armed Forces on 27 May 1960, the government of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes deposed .

Zorlu was sentenced to death in the Yassıada trials and hanged on September 16, 1961 with Hasan Polatkan on the İmralı prison island . The execution of the death sentence against Adnan Menderes followed a day later.
