Hasan Polatkan

Hasan Polatkan (* 1915 in Eskişehir ; † September 16, 1961 on the prison island İmralı ) was a Turkish politician and finance minister of Turkey until the military coup of 1960 .

Life

After studying political science at Istanbul University in 1936, Polatkan worked as an inspector at the state-run TC Ziraat Bankası .

After entering politics, he was elected to the Grand National Assembly from Eskişehir for the Democrat Parti in 1946, and between May 1950 and December 1950 he held the post of Minister of Labor in the cabinet of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes . He later served as Turkey's Finance Minister between 1950 and 1955 and between 1956 and 1960, until the Turkish military put on a coup on May 27, 1960 and he was arrested.

The coup plotters initiated the Yassıada trials against Prime Minister Menderes and officials of his government and party, a total of 592 people. According to the Turkish Penal Code at the time, the death penalty was possible against people " who seek to change, replace or repeal the constitution ". Polatkan, Menderes, Celâl Bayar , Fatin Rüştü Zorlu and eleven other former government officials were sentenced to death by hanging .

On September 16, the death sentences against Polatkan and Zorlu and on 17 September the verdict was against Menderes on the prison island of Imrali enforced . The remaining death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment and Bayar was spared for reasons of age.

On September 17, 1990 his bones as well as those of Menderes and Zorlu were transferred to Istanbul and buried in the so-called Anıtmezar. In Eskişehir a boulevard was named after him.
