Coşkun Kırca

Coşkun Kırca (born March 27, 1927 in Istanbul ; † February 24, 2005 ibid) was a Turkish journalist, diplomat and politician.

Life

Kırca attended the Şişli Terakki Lisesi and the Galatasaray High School and then studied law at the Istanbul Universitesi and in Paris. In 1950 he went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an official and worked, among other things, for the permanent representative of Turkey to NATO. In 1956 he left the ministry and taught at Ankara Üniversitesi in 1956/57 . He then wrote as a journalist for daily newspapers and became head of the capital city office of the daily Vatan . In 1960/61 he was a member of the constituent assembly after the military coup in Turkey in 1960 . In 1961 he was a member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for Istanbul for the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi for two terms . In 1967 he moved to Cumhuriyetçi Güven Partisi (CGP) because he did not want to agree to Bülent Ecevit's left reform ideas .

In 1968 he returned to the Foreign Ministry. From 1970 to 1976 he was Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations in Geneva, from 1976 to 1978 Permanent Representative of Turkey to NATO and from 1980 Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations in New York.

At the beginning of 1985 the Turkish government appointed him ambassador to Ottawa . On March 12, 1985, three Armenian terrorists from the Armenian Secret Army for the liberation of Armenia carried out an attack on Kırca. They stormed the embassy that morning. A Canadian security officer was killed in the process. Kırca saved himself by jumping out the window into the back garden. He suffered several broken bones.

From January 1986 Kırca worked again as a journalist and wrote for daily newspapers and political magazines such as Vatan , Akis , Yeni Vatan , Cumhuriyet , Hürriyet , Milliyet , Sabah and Akşam .

In 1991, Kırca returned to politics. For the Doğru Yol Partisi (DYP) he became a member of the Turkish National Assembly for Istanbul. In 1992 he founded the Galatasaray University with others . In 1995 he was Foreign Minister and Minister of State. In 1996 he left politics. He turned back to writing articles and taught at the Galatasaray University.

Kırca died of a heart attack in Istanbul at the age of 78. He was buried in the Ferikoy cemetery. He was married and had three children.
