After the parliamentary elections in Turkey in June 2015 , the election winner Ahmet Davutoğlu ( AKP ) failed to form a government, so that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called new elections. According to the Turkish constitution, a government must be formed during the transition period to which all parties in parliament belong. If a party does not want to appoint a minister, independents must take their seat in the interim government.

Erdoğan called new elections for November 2015 in August and tasked Davutoğlu with forming a transitional government . Since the largest opposition party Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) and the Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi (MHP) refused to send ministers to the cabinet, the eight ministers had to be filled with independents. Therefore Sinirlioğlu became Foreign Minister until a new government was formed.

Feridun Sinirlioğlu is married to the diplomat Ayşe Sinirlioğlu. The couple have two children.
