Yalçın Akdoğan

Yalçın Akdoğan (born September 22, 1969 in Üsküdar , Istanbul ) is a Turkish journalist and politician . He is a member of the Justice and Recovery Party (AKP) and from August 2014 to May 2016 was initially one of four and later of six deputy prime ministers of Turkey .

Life and education

Akdoğan studied communication science at Anadolu University in Eskişehir and obtained a doctorate in political and social sciences from Marmara University . He worked as a journalist for the daily newspapers Yeni Şafak and Star . He also worked for the district office of Pendik as press advisor to the then AKP chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and finally as press officer for the prime minister.

Political career

In the parliamentary elections in June 2011 , he was elected a member of the AKP for the province of Istanbul , and in the elections of June 2015 and November 2015 he was again a member of the Grand National Assembly .

After Erdoğan's election as president, he became Deputy Prime Minister in the cabinet of the new Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu in August 2014 . On February 28, 2015, Akdoğan, as one of three representatives of the government, signed a declaration with three members of the People's Democratic Party (HDP) in the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul that was intended to permanently end the conflict between the Republic of Turkey and the PKK . In his presence, HDP MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder read a call from the imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to the PKK, broadcast live by several television stations , to lay down their arms.

Akdoğan was also a member of the subsequent interim government , formed in August 2015, and the subsequent third Davutoğlu government as Deputy Prime Minister. During the reshuffle of the government following Davutoğlu's resignation in May 2016, he left the government, but retained his parliamentary mandate.
