Sırrı Süreyya Önder

Sırrı Süreyya Önder (born July 7, 1962 in Adıyaman ) is a Turkish director, actor, journalist and politician ( BDP , then HDP ). He sat for three legislative terms as a member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey .

Life

Önder was born as the oldest child in a family in Adıyaman. His father was the co-founder and chairman of the Türkiye İşçi Partisi in Adıyaman. He died when Önder was still a child. Therefore, he took on odd jobs to support his family. He was later admitted to study at the Political Science Faculty (tr. Mülkiye ) of Ankara University .

In 2006 he made his first film called Beynelmilel ( The International ). In this melodrama he describes the life of a group of musicians in Adıyaman after the military coup in 1980. The film has won several national and international awards. In addition to his work as a director, he also played a number of roles in various films.

Önder has also worked as a columnist for various newspapers such as BirGün and Radikal . He left the Radikal to go into politics.

Political career

For the parliamentary elections in June 2011 , he stood as an independent candidate for Istanbul and was elected. After the election, he joined the Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi (BDP). Önder was one of the BDP MPs who met with Abdullah Öcalan on the prison island İmralı in early 2013 to accompany a new round of negotiations between the state and the PKK . At the Newroz event in 2013 in Diyarbakır , Önder read a letter from Öcalan in which, among other things, it was announced that the PKK fighters will withdraw from Turkey.

Önder was one of the first politicians to take part in the protests in Turkey in 2013 and was admitted to hospital with minor injuries because he was hit in the back by a tear gas grenade. But he was soon released again.

For the local elections in March 2014 , the BDP MPs Önder, Sebahat Tuncel and Ertuğrul Kürkçü decided to resign from the party at the end of October 2013 and to join the Halkların Demokratik Partisi (HDP - The People's Democratic Party). The idea behind this was to give the HDP greater chances in elections because the "Kurdish party" BDP is unattractive in the west of the country. At the beginning of December 2013 Önder was put up as a candidate of the HDP for the office of Lord Mayor of Istanbul, but lost. Önder moved in as MP for Ankara Province in the elections on June 2015 and November 2015 .

Law enforcement and litigation

After the military coup in 1980 , Önder was one of the students who opposed the military junta. He was arrested in 1981 for his activities and sentenced to twelve years in prison. He was detained in various prisons for seven years.

In November 2016, Önder was temporarily arrested by the police.

On the day after the HDP party conference in February 2018, the Ankara public prosecutor opened an investigation against Önder and the newly elected co-chair Pervin Buldan on suspicion of “terrorist propaganda” in their party conference speeches.

On September 7, 2018, Önder was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison for terrorist propaganda.
