Adıyaman ( Kurd. Semsûr ; in ancient times Perrhe or Pordonnium ) is the capital of the Turkish province of Adıyaman . At the same time, the city is the administrative center ( Merkez ) of the district and is home to around 83.7 percent of the district's population. The district, on the other hand, is home to around 48.8 percent of the provincial population.
The history of the city goes back a long way. In ancient times the place was known as Perrhe (Greek: Πέρρη). Perrhe is now in the Örenli district. After the Islamic conquest in the 8th century, the place was called Hisn Mansur (Castle of Mansur). Mansur bin Cavana († 758) was the commander of the Muslims. The current Turkish name Adıyaman has been documented since the 17th century.
The district is the largest in the province in terms of area and population, and its population density is twice the provincial average. In addition to the Adıyaman administrative center, it consists of two other communities ( Belediye ): Kömür (3,283) and Yaylakonak (2,153 inhabitants). There are also 134 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 332 inhabitants. Three villages have over 1000 inhabitants: Gümüşkaya (1,798), Kuyulu (1,647) and Kayaönü (1,094 inh.).
