Besni is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Adıyaman in Southeast Anatolia . The city of Besni makes up around 43.1 percent of the district's population (as of 2018). After the Turkish Republic was proclaimed in 1923, Besni was a district of Gaziantep Province until 1933 with Gölbaşı, which at that time belonged to Besni . From 1933 it belonged to Malatya until it finally became a district of Adıyaman, which had become a province in 1954. Besni is located in the southwest of the province and borders the provinces of Şanlıurfa , Kahramanmaraş and Gaziantep.

In addition to the district town, the district includes five other cities / municipalities ( Belediye ): Şambayat (3,767), Suvarlı (2,545), Köseceli (2,317), Çakırhüyük (1,976) and Kesmetepe (1,696 pop .). In addition, there are 67 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 473 inhabitants in the district. Atmalı (1,717), Sayören (1,661) and Oyratlı (1,503 pop .) Are the largest.

Attractions

The remains of the castle and other medieval buildings of Eski Besni (Old Besni) can be seen south of the district town . Further south, near Üçgöz (formerly Sofraz) are the two Sofraz tumuli , which contain Roman chamber tombs.
