Samsat is a young city in the historic region of Kommagene and at the same time a district in the Turkish province of Adıyaman in southeastern Anatolia . The city of Samsat is the only one in the district and is home to 47.6 percent of the district's population. Samsat was re-established in 1988 to accommodate the inhabitants of the former Samsat near ancient Samosata , which was submerged in the floods of the reservoir .
The small district of Samsat is located in the south of the province and borders the Ataturk Dam , which also forms the border with the southern province of Şanlıurfa . Samsat has the smallest population and the lowest population density of all counties in Adıyaman Province. In addition to the district town, it also consists of 16 villages ( Köy , plural: Köyler ) with an average of 259 inhabitants. Taşkuyu is the largest of these with 797 inhabitants.
