Ban on sale

On May 19, 2009, the sale of Red Bull Cola in Hesse was prohibited by the Hessian food supervisory authority, as there were traces of cocaine in Red Bull Cola in the amount of 0.4 micrograms per liter by the State Institute for Health and Labor of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia have been proven. The drink was also withdrawn from circulation in North Rhine-Westphalia , Thuringia , Lower Saxony , Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate . The sale of the drink falls under the Narcotics Act and violates food law . Since consumer protection is a matter for the federal states, individual decisions by the federal states are pending. However, according to the company, Red Bull Cola and other foods that contain coca leaf extracts are considered safe and marketable in both the EU and the USA. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment also determined that the quantities found in the samples are harmless to health. They would be 7,000 to 20,000 times below the effective limit.

The sales ban was lifted on August 24, 2009.

In June 2009 in Austria limit values for decocainized coca leaf extracts were set in the Narcotics Ordinance due to the cocaine discoveries.

Others

Red Bull advertised the drink with the slogan “The Cola from Red Bull” . This deliberately chosen advertising presence caused confusion in large parts of Germany because, unlike Austria, the neuter article is not used there for cola .
