Sebahat Tuncel (born July 5, 1975 in Yazıhan in Malatya Province ) is a Kurdish politician, women's rights activist, former nurse and member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey .

Sebahat Tuncel was born in Yazıhan in 1975 as the daughter of Fahrettin and Meryem Tuncel in an Alevi family. She studied cartography and land surveying at Mersin Üniversitesi . Sebahat Tuncel was a co-founder of the Democracy Toplum Partisi (DTP) and a member of the Central Committee . Tuncel also worked for international organizations such as UNDP and Amnesty International .

In 2006 she was accused of making several trips to the PKK camps in northern Iraq and was charged on suspicion of membership in the PKK and detained in Gebze . Tuncel ran for the 2007 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate for the province of Istanbul and won with 93,000 votes in the third constituency of Istanbul. She was then released on July 25, 2007. This makes Tuncel the first MP to win an election from prison. She is also the youngest MP in Turkey's history. Tuncel is single.

After the ban on DTP on December 11, 2009, Tuncel joined the Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi . For the parliamentary elections in June 2011 she ran as an independent candidate for Istanbul and was re-elected.

In March 2013, a court in Silopi fined her 25,000 Turkish lira for slapping a police inspector in Şırnak during the 2011 Newroz celebrations .

For the upcoming local elections in March 2014 , the BDP MPs Tuncel, Ertuğrul Kürkçü and Sırrı Süreyya Önder decided to leave the party at the end of October 2013 and to join the Halkların Demokratik Partisi (HDP; The People's Democratic Party). The idea behind this was to achieve greater chances in the elections with the HDP, because the "Kurdish party" BDP is unattractive in the west of the country. At the HDP party convention on October 27th in Ankara, Tuncel was elected party chairman along with Kürkçü.
