Beynelmilel - Die Internationale is a Turkish film by Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Muharrem Gülmez , which was produced in 2006 and was released in January 2007. He tells in a tragically funny way about the effects of the military coup of 1980 on the lives of traditional musicians in eastern Turkey.

action

Back in 1982, shortly after the coup, strict laws still prevailed in Turkey. Abuzer is a widower and a musician (tr: Gevende ) from Adıyaman , who can only secretly pursue his job with other friends because of the curfew. But one day they are picked up by the military in an illegally opened “pub” and arrested. They are only released when they undertake to form a modern band under the guidance of an officer. Since leading members of the military council will be visiting the city in the coming days, the group around Abuzer is to become part of the reception committee.

But the student Haydar is also working towards the visit of the military council. As a staunch communist, he wants to protest against the military with an action. Abuzer's daughter Gülendam, who is in love with Haydar, comes into contact with the idea of communism through him and questions the prevailing order in Turkey. Both Abuzer and Haydar's brother Servet are skeptical about this and worry. One day Abuzer surprises his daughter while playing the Internationale and asks curious about the song that he likes very much. Out of fear, she says that this is just a classic foreign (Beynelmilel) song and has no idea that her father wants to play exactly this song at the reception of the military council.

On the day of the arrival of the military council, the music band plays its reception song in honor of it, which causes unrest and confusion among the military. At the same time, Gülendam has a huge poster with anti-militarist slogans (Cuntalar olmasın - There should be no military junta), which escalates the situation, shots are fired and Haydar is hit. The council members leave the square and the entire chapel is captured. The musicians and Gülendam are later seen in a prison, where they are harassed and beaten because they are believed to be communist conspirators. After one last look at his daughter, Abuzer says that it was his only composition, he is led away and never appears again. In the last scene you can see the aged Gülendam with her daughter when suddenly the Russian army choir sings the International on TV. When her daughter asks which song it is, Gülendam weeping replies that it is her father's work.
