Pune International Film Festival
The Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) has been held annually since 2002 in the west Indian city of Pune , Maharashtra . The festival has been the official film festival of the state of Maharashtra since 2010. Feature films, short films and animated films are presented.
The director of the festival has been the Indian director Jabbar Patel , who also chairs the Pune Film Foundation, which organizes and runs the Pune International Film Festival in close cooperation with the government of the state of Maharashtra.
The “Prabhat” prizes of the government of Maharashtra are awarded annually by an international jury: The best international film is selected from fourteen films and awarded to the best international director, the best (Indian) film in the state of Maharashtra becomes the Sant Tukaram Prize, an audience prize and other sponsorship prizes will be awarded.
The main prize is 10 lakh INR, which corresponds to a value of approx. 12,000 EUR (as of November 2018).
It is a definite goal of the festival organizers to position the city of Pune as an important, cosmopolitan film city in India and internationally: Pune, a West Indian city with a long history, known as the fortress and capital of the Marathas in the fight against the Mughals , has been known since the beginning of the 20th century as a city of science (including Fergusson College), since the end of British colonial rule as a film city and more recently - additionally and beyond - as a city of the automotive industry.
The city of Pune is also the seat of the Film and Television Academy of India ( FTII ) and the seat of the National Film Archive of India . A number of Indian filmmakers who work in Mumbai (" Bollywood ") have taken up residence in the city. Other Indian film metropolises are Kolkata , Bangalore , Chennai , Trivandrum and Goa .
The festival is in natural competition with other, supraregional Indian film festivals among which the International Film Festival of India ( IFFI ), founded in 1952, which takes place every year in Goa , probably attracts the greatest attention.
