The ax (original title: Le Couperet ; alternative title: Jobkiller - A murderous career ) is a French feature film by Costa-Gavras from 2005. The film is an adaptation of the novel The Ax by Donald E. Westlake .

action

Bruno Davert has been working as a chemist in paper production for 15 years. He loves his job and is honored by his employer for his many years of service. After the merger with a Romanian company, however, the group suddenly restructured and numerous jobs were relocated abroad in order to lower production costs . Bruno becomes unemployed.

Over the course of the next few months, Bruno became increasingly depressed. There is no new job in sight. There are only a few positions in the industry that qualify for his qualification. Inspired by an Arcadia promotional video, Bruno had an idiosyncratic idea to get the job of chief engineer there. He posts a newspaper ad to anonymously meet applicants for such a position. With the help of the applications, he filters the possible candidates and then murders them one by one. In the end, only the boss of Arcadia remains. When the last competitor did not escape his attack, the way was free for him.

Reviews

“A jet-black thriller that shows the abysses that open up when people fight for their dignity and the right to work. The political statements do not come to the fore as much as in other Costa-Gavras films, but the director boldly and pointedly gives an idea of what frustrated people are capable of in the age of globalization. "

“Director Costa-Gavras (“ Z ”) skilfully mixes a classic thriller in the best Hitchcock style with a grotesque satire full of bitter social criticism. In addition, José Garcia gives the desperate killer a likable face. "

"Political thriller specialist Constantin Costa-Gavras (" Z - Anatomy of a Political Murder "," Betrayed "," The Deputy ") staged one with" The Ax ", which can also be seen in this country under the title" Jobkiller " of his few comedies. The result is a funny genre work with many satirical swipes, which lives especially from the play of its convincing main actor José Garcia. "
