biography
Armand Amar was born to an Israeli mother and a Jewish-Moroccan father with a French passport. As a child, he emigrated with his father to Morocco , where he grew up. He refuses to speak of his relationship with his mother, although that relationship was renewed in early 2011 after years of no contact. Amar moved to France with his father at the age of 15 after a wave of anti-Semitism hit North Africa in the wake of the Six Day War .
He has been interested in music since his youth and began to teach himself to play several instruments, including the zarb and tabla . He later looked for teachers to refine his knowledge. After he came into contact with dance at the invitation of the South African choreographer Peter Goss in 1976 and got to know the actor Patrice Chéreau , he later studied music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur . In 1994 he founded his own music publishing company with the French composer Alain Weber . He has been working as a film composer for French film since the early 2000s . He has been nominated four times for the French César film award, and in 2010 he received an award for best composer for his music in the drama Das Konzert . For his composition on the Norwegian drama A Thousand Times Good Night , Amar was awarded the Norwegian Film Prize Amanda for Best Music in 2014.
Amar became world famous through the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . His work "La Terre Vue Du Ciel" (The earth viewed from heaven) was the music for the freestyle program of the German Olympic champions Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot . Former Olympic champion in ice dancing Christopher Dean choreographed the program for Amar's instrumental piece, which served uncut as the basis for the freestyle, which was awarded a world record by the judges.
